Pi-hole vs AdGuard Home: Network-Wide Ad Blocking Compared
Pi-hole and AdGuard Home block advertising, tracking, and unwanted domains at the DNS level. Configure your router or devices to use either one as the DNS server, and protection extends to phones, televisions, game consoles, and smart devices without browser extensions.
Both are excellent. The choice comes down to interface, integrated features, and how much control you want.
What Is Pi-hole?
Pi-hole is the best-known DNS filtering project in the homelab community. It combines a DNS sinkhole, query visibility, configurable blocklists, and local DNS management.
Pi-hole strengths:
- Large community and extensive tutorials
- Mature blocklist ecosystem
- Simple core purpose
- Strong query logging and group management
- Easy integration with Unbound for recursive DNS
- Runs well on modest hardware
What Is AdGuard Home?
AdGuard Home is a self-hosted DNS filtering server with a polished interface and several security and family features integrated into one application.
AdGuard Home strengths:
- Built-in encrypted DNS options
- Client-based filtering settings
- Integrated parental and safe-search controls
- Modern, approachable interface
- Straightforward all-in-one configuration
- Cross-platform release options

| Best fit | Tinkerers and established homelabs | All-in-one simplicity |
Blocking Effectiveness
Both products use filter lists and custom rules, so results depend more on list quality than the product name. Start with conservative defaults. Huge overlapping lists can increase false positives without meaningfully improving privacy.
DNS filtering cannot remove every advertisement. Ads served from the same domain as desired content—including many video ads—cannot be blocked reliably without also blocking the content. A browser content blocker can complement network-level DNS filtering.
Privacy and Encrypted DNS
AdGuard Home includes convenient support for encrypted DNS protocols. Pi-hole users often pair it with Unbound, cloudflared, or another local resolver.
Encrypted DNS protects DNS traffic between specific points; it does not make all browsing anonymous. Your resolver choice, browser configuration, and network architecture still matter.
DHCP and Client Identification
Both can serve DHCP, which is useful when a router will not let you advertise a custom DNS server. Running DHCP on the filtering server can also improve per-device reporting.
Only one authoritative DHCP service should normally operate on a network segment. Disable the router's DHCP service before enabling a replacement, and keep recovery instructions in case the DNS server fails.
Reliability: Run Two DNS Servers
DNS becomes critical infrastructure once every device depends on it. Consider two filtering instances on separate machines, with configuration kept in sync. Do not enter a public DNS server as a casual “secondary” if you expect all queries to be filtered—clients may use either server.
Monitor both instances and keep their host addresses static.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose Pi-hole if you:
- Want the largest homelab support community
- Prefer a focused DNS filtering tool
- Plan to pair it with Unbound
- Enjoy assembling and tuning individual components
- Already have Pi-hole working reliably
Choose AdGuard Home if you:
- Want encrypted DNS configured in one interface
- Need convenient per-client family controls
- Prefer an integrated, modern dashboard
- Want fewer supporting components
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run Pi-hole and AdGuard Home together?
You can run separate instances, but chaining them usually adds complexity and makes troubleshooting harder. Choose one for primary filtering unless you have a specific testing goal.
Will either block YouTube ads?
Not reliably. DNS filtering works at the domain level, and YouTube can serve ads from infrastructure also used for video content.
Do they replace antivirus software?
No. Blocking known malicious domains is useful, but it is only one layer of network security.
The Bottom Line
Pi-hole wins for community depth and a modular homelab approach. AdGuard Home wins for integrated encrypted DNS and family-friendly controls. Blocking performance is excellent on both, so choose the interface and operating model you will maintain consistently.
